Firefox speed-up

Lots of people have been talking about the Firefox speed tweak that was in The Inquirer recently. Here's a link to the article.

Update, Feb 2, 2005
Never can tell when links and/or text will disappear so here's a rundown on how to accomplish the speed-up:

Type "about:config" into the address bar, then alter the following entries: change "network.http.pipelining" to "true", "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true" and lastly "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to 30, meaning it will be able to make 30 requests at once.

Update, Feb 7. 2005
Another tip surfaced from what appears to be the original article and that's to create a new integer from the about:config display (right-click anywhere and select New -> Integer), name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set it to 0.

More Firefox extensions

xMirror v0.1.1 available from Meatme adds 3 extensions mirrors to the Firefox extension dialog.

User Agent Switcher gives the user the ability to change the User Agent string (the string that identifies your browser to the web server at the other end of the pipe) between the default of Firefox, IE, Opera and Netscape. You can edit the existing User Agent strings as well as add and delete strings. The page listed also shows you what your User Agent string is.

DRM a conduit for Spyware

This article from Desktop Pipeline gives an overview of how Digital Rights Management is being used by some to turn the download of a digital license into a spyware download.

I don't want to sound like gloom and doom but it's not safe out there. You have to make sure you know what you're downloading, and from where. And it's getting more and more difficult to do so.

Open Ports On Your XP System?

Microsoft has a tool you can run on Win2K, 2003 Server and XP to see what ports are open and which process has them open. It's called PortQryV2 and is available here. There's also a GUI front-end to it called PortQryUI, available here.
